For energy and antioxidant capability
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like molecule present in every cell of your body. It is part of the electron transport energy-production chain of molecules in your cells’ mitochondria ( the ‘power plants’ of your cells). It is also a potent antioxidant, helping to protect your cells from free radical damage. It has been shown to help your body maintain blood pressure levels within normal range and to support healthy heart function.
Your body normally makes its own CoQ10, although levels can decline over time especially after age 30. Aging, genetics, and cholesterol-lowering statin drugs can lead to a CoQ10 deficiency. However, it does not appear to be the most important rate-limiting factor in energy metabolism for most people, that rate-limiting molecule seems to more commonly be NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide).
Consequently, I would recommend for extra energy that you start with
NAD alone, and after a couple weeks on that if you still feel low on energy, then try adding CoQ10 supplementation along with it. If the combination does nothing for you after a month or two, there would be no reason to continue with it.
PRECAUTION: there is some evidence in the scientific literature that CoQ10 may accelerate prostate cancer in men, so if you have an elevated PSA (prostate specific antigen) lab test value or already know you have prostate cancer (which is almost expected in older men past 80 or 90 years), either do not take CoQ10 at all or only do it with your doctor’s close supervision and more-often-than-usual monitoring of your PSA level.
